How To Use Sage to Smudge Your Space

A smudge stick is a bundle of dried herbs, most commonly white sage. Other herbs or plants are often added, such as sweetgrass, lavender, cedar or copal, and the leaves are bound with string in a small bundle and dried. A Native American tradition for thousands of years, smudging is used as a physical and spiritual way to cleanse a person, object or environment of negative energy, allowing healing and positive energy to take its place.

1. Begin by lighting the smudge stick. Once lit, gently extinguish the flame. If you have difficulty keeping the sage lit, gently blow on the embers to keep it smoldering. To direct the smoke, you may continue to blow on the glowing embers or use a ceremonial feather to fan the embers instead.

2. Smudging may also be done using a bowl, incense burner or abalone shell, with the sage directly lit or burned on a charcoal tablet. When using charcoal tablets, the bowl, burner or shell should first be filled with sand to prevent overheating of the container and to provide additional stability and security.

3. Start at the doorway of each area, directing the smoke completely around the door frame. Working clockwise, move to each corner of the room, then down the middle with a circular motion. Don't forget to open closets, cabinets, drawers and other closed areas. Smudge all rooms, as well as the garage, basement, outside perimeter and yard of your home.

4. As you fan the smoke into each area, thank your God, Higher Power or Spirit Guide for blessings, help in ridding the area of any negativity and bad influences and allowing the smoke to carry all negative and unwanted energy away from your home, office or environment. Be sure to open as many windows as possible, to purge the smoke, with all the negative energy, outside and allow fresh air and positive energy inside.

5. To avoid smoldering pieces of ash from the sage or string from falling on the floor, use a smudge bowl, plate or shell to catch the ashes. Be sure to completely extinguish any flame or embers upon completion.

6. You may notice the difference in energy right away or shortly thereafter. Be sure to take some time to relax and enjoy your newly cleansed environment.
